Inverter-based Systems and Grid Protection

Protection systems are designed to detect and isolate faults from power systems. Protection engineers are very comfortable with designing the protection systems for the grid and have been protecting a grid that has been dominated by synchronous machines for years. Today, the increased use of renewable energy resources such as wind and solar, which supply power via inverters, are being added to the grid. These types of resources are known as Inverter-Based Resources (IBR), and they add a new challenge to the protection of power systems. The fault contribution from a small percentage of IBRs may not have substantial impact on the grid and its protection, but a larger penetration will. Talk with us in Booth #2431 to see how we can help you with these pressing issues.
